Interpreting an Author's Words

ISBN 0-9801674-7-7

Author: Hollis L. Green, ThD, PhD

The difficulty in understanding the written word is not the vagueness of the composition, but the elusiveness of the author.  A basic problem in understanding an author’s words relates to the language and culture.  When words or thoughts are translated from one language and a particular culture to another the meaning changes.  These changes often go unnoticed and individuals apply a current definition to the words.  In fact the meaning of words is in people.  This could be the reason English/European students read authors rather than subjects.  Knowing the orientation of the author and the background, philosophy, and purpose of the composition increases the understanding of the written document.  So rooted in the earliest awareness of a need for knowledge and the continuing search by generations of thinkers, the systematic process of investigation emerge, in spite of the hurdles of vested interests and lack of support from the general populous.  The present concept of scientific methodology began to form during medieval times and developed into a full body of concepts and constructs in the modern age  As humans wrote down their observations, the effort to understand what was written began.  To understand and interpret different aspects of human existence, various groups of scholars began to devise different schemes, but all used the basic method of inquiry.

Is There Really Life After Death?

ISBN 978-1-935434-35-1

Author: George K. Somerville, DPhil

Living the Resurrected Life is a spiritual journey! Emphasizing that Christ's “death defying act” can be confirmed through reading the scriptures, Dr. George Somerville shows how, we too, can experience the reality of His resurrection; by dying to our old nature and taking on the new life of the risen Christ. This volume not only explores the history and the politics leading to this doorway of faith, but it also details the spiritual steps to both finding that threshold ... and crossing it.

HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?

ISBN 0-9801674-1-8

Author: Brian J. Shelley, DPhil

The book tells you how to apply critical thinking skills to the Scripture.  People are usually surprised to learn that the Bible does not teach some things they were taught.  Have you ever investigated whether people in the New Testament sought signs, revelation, a peaceful feeling, or leading or guiding of the Holy Spirit when they made decisions?  The book examines questions that are not usually addressed, such as: Can God be the sovereign and individuals have a free? Does God determine, or  cause, everything that happens, or do some things “just happen?” Does God allow bad things to happen to good people? Does God really command abstinence from alcohol? Does God see all nudity and sexuality in art as pornography? Are faith and logic compatible?  Can they be reconciled? Read this book for the answers you seek!

The Knowledge of Good and Evil

ISBN 978-0-9801674-9-8

Author: Joshua Collins

Best Seller This text attempts to loosen the knots of forgotten history and inspire the reader to advance beyond this research and separate fact from fable and lucidity from legend. The story of Eden is the first point in history where error passed into humanity, and it is this point (connected with its historically consequential ramifications) that Christ came to rectify. This text is but a beginning mark meant to invigorate the reader with passion past what has been inexplicably assumed by hazy traditions of which few attempt to sift but of which many attempt to mandate as fact. For instance, it has been stated that the Holy Bible never discusses the topic of abortion, though the very word "abortion" is used more than once, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, with explicit applications, as we will soon investigate.

    PHILOSOPHY OF ADULT EDUCATION

  $14.95
AUTHOR: Hollis L. Green, ThD, PhD

Understanding how human beings function in families, groups, and organizations is a precondition to creating an atmosphere conducive to learning and the prevention of failure in education.  A foundational philosphy of life begins with three basic institutions.  These institutions were ordained and ordered by Divine Providence.  They are the established family, constituted community authority, and the organized church.  Educational leadership must clearly comprehend that the primary concern of Divinity was individual welfare.  When concern for individual rights and justice is placed on the back burner in order to increase bottom line profits, or a public agenda, evil is apparent in the process.   In a Christian organization, an individual can never become just a number to be discarded or dealt with arbitrarily.  Of course, there are times when behavior violates organizational culture and eliminates an individual from productive involvement.  In such case, the leadership must function for the good of the whole.

    WHY WAIT TILL SUNDAY?
      $9.95
AUTHOR: Hollis L. Green, ThD, PhD

The artificial manipulation of personal activity in an attempt to accomplish a spiritual work can never maintain the witness of a Christian congregation.  Are there no Christian incentives for involvement?  Does no personal motivation or impulse to Christian activity exist in the church?   Must the church arrange all religious activity?  Does the internal change which comes with Christian conversion not require the individual to be personally involved in sharing the faith with family, friends, and neighbors, -- even enemies?   Individual Christians must become involved in the daily sharing of a common faith.  The Christian community suffers when too few attempt to do too much.  Scripture furnishes ample precedent for a personalized persistent involvement in the market place rather than an occasional activity in the stained glass ghetto of the church.  The true nature of New Testament Christianity was determined by a simple pattern.   No one waited till Sunday or invited a friend to church to  hear a sermon to become a Christian.  Every believer felt a part of the priesthood of believers.

    INTREGRATING MORAL VALUES
      $14.95
AUTHOR: Hollis L. Green, ThD, PhD

Why does morality and ethics have difficulty in a pluralistic society?  What is the inferior process that weakens the moral fiber? Why has the message of grace and forgiveness failed to be a viable expression of faith to the community?  When institutionalized religion fails to reach a community with the message of morality and ethics, individual practitioners of faith may succeed with basic integration that produces social change.   Members of the social professions are confronted daily with an opportunity for a contextual understanding of the secular market place often lost to religious leaders.  In the past, an application of the essential elements of religious faith was left to the professional church staff who had limited contact and little understanding of the realities of the masses. There remains a “great fixed gulf“ between the religious conviction and the community.  The separation of church and state has created a kind of stained-glass barrier that separated the sacred from the secular.   Sadly, this diminished the core values and moral fiber of the community and created a contextual atmosphere that bred discrimination and segregation.  To integrate basic moral values into a pluralistic community, individuals and groups must have a comprehensive grasp of the many aspects of culture and tradition.

    LESSONS FROM LUKE: NT 101

  $14.95
AUTHOR: Hollis L. Green, ThD, PhD

In an early and emergent form, the fundamental elements of pristine Christianity were presented in the Gospel of Luke.  This Gospel was written to provide “all that Jesus began to do and teach.”  It is clear from the text that Luke understood that Jesus continuously taught and often repeated central truths.   From the study of eye-witness accounts, Luke was convinced that the past details had present value.  From these documents, Luke gathered basic constructs from which were formulated some first principles that guided the early believers.  These first things have been overlooked or neglected by present leadership in Christianity.  This book is an effort to draw fresh attention to early historical facts that still speak truth to the church today.   Even though Luke demonstrates great academic skill in presenting the Gospel and Acts, the priority of Luke’s work has been neglected.

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE YOU GOING?

  $14.95
AUTHOR: Hollis L. Green, ThD, PhD

After several decades of Christian journalism it was suggested that I speak directly to the “stop the world, I want to get off” generation.  This “cut flower” society has filled the schools with beautiful people without goals who desperately need meaning and direction in life.  College campuses are crowded with brilliant scholars who seem to be avoiding the resolution of life’s big questions.  The careers of many young people have been interrupted by Military service. The perennial problems of Christian discipleship remain everywhere. This book asks a simple question of this generation, “Where In The World Are You Going?”  It focuses on the student, the scholar, the soldier, the saint, and the sinner.  Life is an unending series of decisions and choices between alternatives.  Decision between alternatives is difficult because it involves an “either-or” element.  A positive implies a negative.  Choosing a profession or a career is not easy.  The decision involves a multitude of other choices, years of training and discipline, perhaps a postponement of marriage, or the dedication to a cause so strong that there is no time left for self.  Some decisions require a promise of “till death do us part,” while others last only until age 65.

ALCOHOLISM AND POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER: ONE AND THE SAME?

  $14.95
  AUTHOR Michael A. Collins, DPhil

This book views alcohol craving and PTSD as synonymous and provides evidences from cross-disciplinary works, including theology, new theory and treatment.  The focus is on the craving experience an alcoholic experience before actually drinking.  Clinical and personal experience has shown the author that the experience is almost identical to those symptoms re-experienced by those suffering from PTSD.  The book highlights research gaps, proposes a startling new theory and therapeutic approach.  It proposes the theses: The Alcoholic craving experience is the re-experiencing element of PTSD, whether in alcoholics with identified or unidentified relational or nonrelational trauma(s).  In individuals with no identifiable trauma, the relapse becomes the traumatic event and shows all the symptoms of PTSD.
